Dear Friends,
During my first night tending bar, I observed a visibly intoxicated patron (VIP) wildly wrestled to the door by an employee, lets call him “Ed!” From my analysis and reflection, I reasoned that the employee could have handled the situation differently by better communication between he and the VIP. For many years I have read about other bars and taverns that have been fined by injured patrons at the hands of bar-security. Many times out of the act of escorting a confrontational patron to the door stresses can run high by both parties involved causing bumps and cuts to the men involved. The best logic and philosophy of the doorman is to talk the patron to the door and/or call the police calmly and methodology before having to get physical. Over the observation and research process of better applications of the job distribution by more knowledgeable employees working bar-security did I understand the saying, “It is better to throw honey before sand out the door!”
Through knowledge and training bar-security can lower the risk of injury to themselves and confrontational patrons, and also lower the risk of lawsuits to the tavern owner(s). Having assisted in seminars and training sessions to diverse groups, ranging from the FBI, Navy Seals, Army Ranger and LAPD, while participating in the Gracie Academy Instructor Training Program for 2 years under the head instruction of Rorion and “Utlimate Fighting Champion” Royce Gracie in Torrance, Ca: I felt it was time to introduce The M.A.R.K. Program™ which stands for Management And Restraining Knowledge for Bar-Security.

The M.A.R.K. Program™ is a Bar-Security and self-defense training program that teaches an employee: procedures for handling visibly intoxicated patrons (VIPS) and confrontational patrons; how to handle oneself mentally and physically during the confrontation stage of a disagreement between two separate parties: the confrontational patron and the employee. Employees of this course are taught communication concepts during the confrontation stage of a disagreement between two separate parties using the Bar Taverns Personal Philosophy in conjunction with Awareness, Assessment and Action Skills.
The M.A.R.K. Program™ ’s philosophy is to solve the problem of bar-tavern patrons receiving injuries that maybe issued by the hands of bar-security.
The M.A.R.K. Program™ instructional formats available to your staff are: one 3-hour seminar, 2 (90-minute) workshops, or semi/private sessions to selected members of the security staff.
The M.A.R.K. Program™ teaches control and restrain techniques & strategies that implement grappling or wrestling arts using superior positioning and distancing knowledge based on the Martial Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instead of the striking arts. Students are taught the importance of immobilization exploring joint manipulations which giving controllable pressure against the elbow, wrist and/or shoulder joints, and also analyze chokeholds that humanely perform employee’s job distribution. Other topics explored are: I.D. analysis; Appearance and Attitude Knowledge; The Progressive Warning System; Doorman procedures for Isolating Customer Fights; Positioning and Distancing Strategies against 1 patron—2 patrons or a group; Self-Defense techniques against the sucker-punch—hand on chest—chokes—headlocks and tackles...And the best of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s Defenses for situations if you are caught trapped against a wall!
The final products of the M.A.R.K. Program™ are to produce a more knowledgeable and safer bar-security staff that will create a better tavern environment for all patrons!
* At the conclusion of the program, all participants will receive a certification card & will be registered on file for any future records for whom it may concern for your business.
