The 2007 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan American Championship

http://soulfight.net/v-web/gallery/albums/album04/RizzandAnthony.jpg

Congratulations to Matt "Rizz" Rizzo and instructor Anthony Colantuono who recently competed at the Pan American Championship held in California.  Matt had over 5 matches and worked his way towards the gold medal after experiencing some of the difficulties of tournament politics.  It was a great experience for both competitors.  The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Pan Am Championships brings together the highest level of Jiu-Jitsu Fighters each year in the United States.  Moreover, it wasn't bad that the tournament was held in the Golden State of California!

Belt Promotions at the Academy
Matt "Rizz" Rizzo promoted to Blue Belt after winning his division at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 2007 Pan Ams. There were many competitors in Matt's division! Congratulations!!!

We would like to congratulate all of the Revolution Academy students that were promoted this past month!  So much progress has been made that several students made it to the next level in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and in the Kids MMA Program.  There were so many names to list from the adult and kids' program.

http://soulfight.net/v-web/gallery/albums/album04/RA_Bjj_logo_small_grey_3.thumb.gif

Here were some big promotions in the adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program:

Anthony Colantuono to 1st Degree Purple Belt, Matt Rizzo to Blue Belt, Chris Cinkaj to Blue Belt, Robert Bullick to Yellow Belt.

In the Kids MMA Program: Kilion Potts from Yellow to Orange Belt, Bobby Potts from White to Yellow Belt and Aaron K. from White to Yellow Belt.

Finally, there were over 40 people that received belt promotional degrees this past month; too many to write down.  Big congratulations again.   The next level is right around the corner, so enjoy your present training!

ACADEMY IMPROVEMENTS- Mat Covers, Thai Bags and Russian Kettlebells

The New Mat Cover is on its way from Mancino Mats.  For those that were thinking when is the MMA Octagon Training Cage going to be finished, the answer is sooner than later (Early May).  Well the basic problem was one of poor timing.

With Anthony and Tony traveling around the country, there was no time to measure the flooring and all the other measurements that Mancino wanted for the best job.  When all is said and done as they say, we are the 1st Martial Arts School in Bucks County to have Octagon Training Cage!

Have you seen the new Muay Thai Banana Bag hanging in the boxing area at the academy?  This new bag can be used during the MMA class and any open mat session during business hours.  In the a few month's, Tony will convince Anthony to get another Thai Bag.  We will have to wait on this...!

Finally, what in the world is that weird looking dumbbell-looking-thing in the weight room?  Well the answer is a Russian Kettlebell.  The Russian Kettlebell has been in use for over 100 hundred and was originally used by the Russian Military.  However, with the Cold War and individuals like the current governor of California in the late 1970's until the 1990's Russian Kettlebell workouts took a backseat to bench presses, body building and isolating muscles to workout.

Time for real strength for Grapplers and Mixed Martial Artists.  "little" Tony was first introduced to Kettlebells from his original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor Steve Maxwell in the late 90's at Maxercise in Philadelphia.  We caught up with Tony and here is what he had to say about Kettlebells which are finally getting more mainstream in the United States:

"Steve Maxwell was always years ahead of everyone else for working out; he was the first person to bring Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to Pennsylvania, a master trainer for personal fitness and today is an authority in the United States under Pavel from Russian.  Originally, I thought that Russian Kettlebell workouts were unique; however, I was young and didn't care much about strength and working out with weights.   Although I have to say that I liked using the Hammer Strength equipment at Maxercise back in 2000 and 2001, and I always stayed in condition because I was competing a lot.  Now that I am getting older, having core strength and back strength is very important to me.  Kettlebell workouts are not boring to me.  Bench pressing and isolating muscles...boring!"

Kettlebell workouts strengthen the whole body.  Hand grip strength, core muscle groups (abs. etc) and lower & upper back muscles are some of the target areas that a kettlebell workout focus on.  The Russian Kettlebells will be in the weight room for all students to use.  And for those students in the MMA Class, Kettlebells are going to bring an extra edge towards better strength and conditioning.  Just remember to ask Tony how to use one before you get started for safety!
