Jiu-Jitsu Universe Review:

The Martial Arts industry is full of DVDs and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is no different. Many of those DVDs aren't worth much discussion. That's why when a DVD set packed with so much insight and useful information comes out, it's important for everyone who practices Jiu-jitsu to be made aware of. Tony Pacenski's Hook Sweep DVD can easily be called, "The most complete study of the Hook Sweep and the many variations involved." "Little Tony" as he's called, is not just a Black Belt in BJJ. It's clear by his skills as an instructor that his Black belt isn't deserved just because of his knowledge and technical skills but because of his teaching abilities as well.

FAIXA PRETA SERIES- Vol. 2: The Hook Sweep (2 disc)-

"One of the best moments in a fight is when a fighter turns the match in his favor!"

This DVD cut through hundreds of ways to reverse your opponent from your guard by focusing on the strategies, techniques and details of one guard position: the hook sweep. The BJJ hook sweep is a high percentage technique. Too many fighters neglect the small details to maintain positions and transition while in the guard because they are trying to use a very dynamic sweep technique and there are mistakes in their movements. These flaws often lead to a fighter getting his guard passed, frustration, loss of endurance and submission. Finally there is an instructional DVD that breaks one of the most effective sweep positions down from A to Z!

Part I: The basics of the hook sweep from stand up and guard position.

Part II:
Maintenance, troubleshooting skills, reaching objective positions that make the hook sweep extremely effective in competition.

Part III: Learn how to flip, turn, roll and win the battle from the bottom position using the Hook Sweep. Tony covers the A to Z of competition variations on the hook sweep from the butterfly guard, half-guard, quarter guard, spider guard, sitting guard, lapel tricks, arm-drags, submission fakes and much more!

=======================================================================

FAIXA PRETA SERIES- Vol. 3: "The 50/50 Guard" for BJJ-

"In a submission grappling match, "The 50/50 Guard" is a
game-ender because of the inverted heel hook. For the BJJ Community, this position has been argued as everything from being an effective and a strategic sweeping game to creating total hatred on the position with thoughts of banning it!"

"The 50/50 Guard" is here to stay. If you are looking for a new sweeping & attack system from the guard or an effective way to quickly take your grappling skill and match a seasoned black belt, you need to learn more about this amazing position. It is one of the most misunderstood positions in the BJJ community. Those that really don't care for the position are the ones getting trapped, swept, heel hooked and thinking of ways to pass this type of guard!

This is the 1st DVD in the world on "The 50/50 Guard" for BJJ.
It focuses on the strategies, techniques and details for BJJ competition. Learn how to get to the position, develop confidence and win! Also learn how to smash and pass "The 50/50 Guard."

Part 1: Entries- Learn how to use 1 or a combination of 4 different entry concepts to reach "The 50/50 Guard" based on the resistance of your opponent that is practical for your age and skill level.

Part 2: Sweeps- Learn how to effectively use strategies to tie up advantage points, take the lead and sweep your opponent standing or on the mat.

Part 3: Submissions- Learn some simple and effective submission attacks from "The 50/50 Guard" to surprise your opponent or cause a better reaction to turn the fight!

Part 4: 50/50 Guard Passing- Learn how to pass from the ground or the standing position. Even if you think you will never use "The 50/50 Guard" from the bottom position, this part of the DVD is important to you for the guard passing aspects alone.

Rave Reviews On The BJJ SEMINAR SERIES &The FAIXA PRETA SERIES-

Sao Paulo Approach Reviews

I got my copy of this last week, and I've watched it twice already. I picked up both of the Mendes Bros Bull Terrier DVDs, the 2009 Worlds DVD, and took a private lesson from my instructor awhile back in order to analyze and learn this style of passing. Tony's DVD has it all in one place and in one usable system.

EVERYONE, do NOT buy this DVD...(only because I want the techniques on this DVD to be a secret!).

Tony's DVD has different variations and with emphasis on leg work,

Basically, if you want to pass guard like the Mendes Bros, Tony's DVD is the closest thing out there right now that is showcasing how they are doing it, the approach and theories behind that style of guard passing. As I've said earlier, some of Mendes passing techniques in sparring and matches are explained in Tony's DVD. While Tony's DVD does not reference the Mendes Bros (albeit he does a little bit in his DVD), you can see some of the very techniques in Tony's DVD used by the Mendes Bros in sparring and in their matches.

There is no doubt you could spend some time putting it all together by watching Mendes matches and sparring footage, and connecting the dots from various other DVDs and books, but Tony's got it all on one DVD (without the cost associated with purchasing all that other stuff), with the approach and theories explained. As you can tell, I've done some research on this, and tried to connect the dots the best I could. Now I have it all in one place, on one DVD. Tony's DVD is black belt level stuff; this style of passing is very hard to do. I just feel that if I keep working at applying the principles in Tony's DVD, I'm going to be a better guard passer with more consistency. The stuff on Tony's DVD is being used at the highest level of BJJ competition right now.

Jiu-Jitsu Gear Forum

The instructional DVDs are very informative and will definitely improve my game. Just want to give everyone a heads up that Tony is a great guy to deal with. Thanks again, Tony!

Sao Paulo Approach to Passing the Guard DVD Review!

I recently received a copy of Tony Pacensk’s new Guard passing DVD, the Sao Paulo approach to passing the guard and was pleasantly surprised by the content on this set. The DVD is broken down into a brief introduction, explaining a bit about the content and parts 1 and 2 of the instruction.

Part 1 is footage that was shot during a seminar in July 2010 in Pennsylvania. The topic of the seminar was guard passing, specifically what Pacenski calls “The Sao Paulo Approach” to passing the guard. He begins with a pretty thorough explanation of a traditional standing guard break to put context to the later material. After explaining the traditional standing break, he goes into passing De la riva guard, the sitting guard, Reverse De la riva guard and approaching the open guard if there is no physical contact made between yourself and your opponent. The techniques that he teaches are well explained and form a pretty logical sequence as they progress through the various sections. The techniques are broken down into groups of two or three techniques/concepts followed by a quick recap at the end of each section. What I liked about this particular set is that the camera man films from good, clear angles and Pacensk’s voice is clear and audible at all times during the set. That’s one of the things that sometimes turned me off to seminar DVDs in the past; that the audio was generally spotty and the angles are not always the most clear. Good job done here.

Technique wise, part 1 sets a good foundation for a clear system of passing some of the more common types of open guard games that people are playing now. Part 2 goes deeper into more advanced problems that one may come across when using this system of passing against higher level opponents.

Part 2 is filmed as a classic Bjj instructional format in that there is an explanation of technique and the conditions that it is meant for and then there is a demonstration of the technique. Like I said above, this part troubleshoots the system laid out in part 1 and goes deeper into passing more complex guard games using the same concepts laid out in part 1. He also goes briefly into the Sao paulo/Tozi/Wilson Reis pass system at the end of part 2 which I liked a lot.

What I like about this DVD is that I’ve seen in competition and have been taught all of these passes from different people in the last two or three years, but I’ve never seen them all tied together into one coherent system as they are on this DVD. It is a good introduction to a style of guard passing that the highest level of competitors have been using lately and touches upon some more advanced ideas in part 2 without going overboard and getting too complicated.

Without revealing too much the whole DVD revolves around two central concepts/themes. One that deals with a specific passing concept and one that involves what happens immediately after the pass in side mount. Everything stems off of those two ideas if you watch this DVD, and then watch 2009/2010 Pan ams and Mundials footage, you will start to recognize these two themes immediately.

In short, I would definitely recommend this DVD to my friends and students and think that it would be suitable for all belt levels, but especially for Blue and Purple belt level students. Well worth the price. This DVD gets Two snaps and a twist

I picked up his set (both passing seminars, 50/50, hook sweeps, and partner drills) last week. I agree with this review. I've been trying to learn this style of passing for a while, and there are some really good details here that are helping me out a lot.

My only other comment is that I wish he had either worn his underwear higher or had a longer skirt.

His 50/50 DVD is also really good. Has a lot of good details and is a good contrast to Ryan's DVD which was no-gi focused. His first seminar DVD has some good stuff; it's basic (nothing that should surprise a blue), but is well done (my only complaint is that the music is WAY too loud during the review sections that he has after he shows each move in the seminar -- I end up turning my speakers down every time).

Haven't had a chance to work through the hook sweep or partner drill DVDs yet. So far though it's been an awesome set.

Thanks for the review..Tony is a great guy and a BJJ instructor

I picked up this set, and have been enjoying it so far. I'll post more once I work through it all the way. Two basic points though:

(1) Tony shows a really interesting, competition-level guard passing system.

(2) I think this DVD is too advanced for most blue belts. At least the first half. A lot of the counters and positions are so far "up the chain" that I don't think blue belts really are likely to deal with them on a regular basis. Most blue belts are having enough of a time learning how to execute basic guard passes with proficiency, but the first half of the DVD deals with DLR/reverse DLR/single leg guard type passing, with a sao paulo variation to them, which I'm guessing is both a bit advanced for blue belts and not exactly their main concern when guard passing. Also, the lack of a "formal" presentation is going to make it harder for a low level BJJ guy to understand -- it's seminar footage, not a clear mechanical breakdown with menus and such.

I'm going to have to agree with MUFC on this one. But make no mistake, Tony's DVD series is entitled "Faixa Preta" for a reason! This stuff is very hard to learn!

MMA. TV From: deepu

I recently got my copy and have only browsed a bit ... everything I have seen is incredible. All details that are great and that I need to add to my game!

FROM NHB.GEAR>COM

Jaymat: Tony sent me a DVD as well. My first introduction to this style of passing was when I trained at Checkmat where every guard passing class featured this style. For those who are unfamiliar to the Sao Paulo style, it is the use of your hip and legs to redirect your opponent's legs causing both legs together facing one direction. With various grips on the belt and collar, you cause your opponent the very limited option of turning his back or giving up the pass. A really large part of my game is my open guard. When I was at Checkmat, my open guard was really put to the test. The constant threat of leg drags and the "Sao Paulo" style pressure was unfamiliar and very difficult to stop against someone well versed in this style of passing. I had the fortune of being at the receiving end of leg drags from Rafa Mendes and rarely have I felt so helpless.

I won't go too in-depth on the content because Josh covered it well. But I think anyone remotely curious as to what the Mendes brothers and Atos team members, Cobrinha and Langhi are doing to pass the guard should watch this DVD. You'll have a bunch of little "aha" moments while watching these guys in action.

The instruction was clear, succinct and to the point. As Josh mentioned, I really liked the use of additional footage to clarify the blind-spots and angle issues with nearly all seminar DVDs. The DVD had quite a few gem details that I did not know. The instruction on positioning before entering someone's guard and causing the opponent to tilt at an angle to start pass was gold. I loved the inverse DLR breaks shown. The inverse DLR is coming into vogue now (especially lightweight and under) and the techniques shown are invaluable. This is the only English-language resource of its kind on the market (Cobrinha's Japanese DVD covers some of it as does the Mendes brothers) and the only one which puts in the context of a system. You'll have newfound respect for this style of passing once you're on the receiving of someone well-versed in it. At the minimum, get this to know what to expect.

So that's everything good about the DVD. There are, however, a few negatives. These negatives are purely subjective.

For some reason the video was harsh on the eyes for me. Particularly "part 2" of the instruction. I don't know if its because I'm getting older, but the white on white gis and the home-video quality of the video w/o the appropriate lighting made for a somewhat unpleasant watch. Many may not have the same issue so it is not a real tick on the video, just one individual's gripe.

Also, I wish it had chapters with titles. Holiday/family/shopping circumstances made me watch it in 4 sittings and every time I returned, I had no idea where I was. You have to fast forward like a VHS and hope you found where you were. Due to the seminar format and lack of technique listings, you just had to make an educated guess.

Anyway, this is a very very solid product. Even if you are a beginner and want to learn to pass, this style of passing is not too advanced for you. It's not any more complicated than the traditional methods, it's just a different take with a different mentality.

The BJJ SEMINAR SERIES:
Vol. 2: Gi Techniques- "The Sao Paulo Approach" to Passing the Guard-

" In Vol 2, my latest curriculum DVD I explain "The Sao Paulo Approach." This is a revolutionary method of passing the guard that controls the legwork and hips of the opponent with a pressure game forcing him to turn to the knees or giving you the ability to pass when you want with control! I coined the phase the Sao Paulo Approach because of the different patterns I observed hat were applied and taught to me from the fighters coming out of Sao Paulo, Brazil. From this, I put everything together and developed a curriculum for my friends to understand." ~ "little" Tony Pacenski

Q: Is "The Sao Paulo Approach" like "The Sao Paulo Pass" that Wilson Reis does?

A: NO."The Sao Paulo Approach" is not the Sao Paulo Pass, The Wilson Reis or "Tozi Pass;" however, I put "The Sao Paulo pass-opening" in the DVD at the end out of respect to Wilson Reis who taught me his pass system in Philadelphia. "The Sao Paulo Approach" pressure game is used after the guard is opened standing or on the mat. "The Sao Paulo Approach" is a method of redirecting the legwork of your opponent and effectively controlling his hips with superior grips, angles, leverage and pressure to pass the guard or force a back attack. "The Sao Approach" pressure game can be used after using the Sao Paulo Pass to open the guard. Further, it can be used during a lot of classical guard passes you know already. It is a different and effective approach..."The Sao Paulo Approach!"

This seminar was a follow up workshop in Philadelphia filmed as part of "The BJJ Seminar Series", July 7, 2010. During the seminar, "little" Tony explored many awesome techniques and strategies on guard passing using "The Sao Paulo Approach". Learn these movements and take your grappling skills to the next level! SOULFIGHT.NET not only filmed the seminar in great detail, but also shot each move at a secondary location in Los Angeles from two different angles so that nothing could be missed.

- Analysis of the Sao Paulo Pressure Game. Learn different grips, angles and weight distributions to trap and control your opponent after successfully guard passing.
- Avoiding common mistakes after redirecting the hips/legwork, control the strongest and heaviest jiu- jitsu fighter, and move to the mount or make the bottom opponent want you to pass the guard.
- Troubleshooting the Sao Paulo Pressure Game: Understanding the pros and cons of the approach.
